ULURU

The Uluru project team is developing an experimental facilitating platform, with which content owners can provide audiovisual services and information on mobile terminals (telephones, PDA's, ...).

This will allow content owners and operators of mobile networks to experiment with services for mobile applications. Initially GPRS networks will be used, later evolving towards UMTS. The study focuses on the personalised provision of content in a secure manner, whereby payments are balanced with the copyrights associated with the content.

Platform for mobile multi-media services
MobiView and Telematica Instituut initiated, in 2001, a joint development programme, ULURU; this programme is supported by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs.

ULURU has its focus on aspects that play a primary role in the value chain between content providers, mobile network operators and end-users. Research has been performed in the following areas: personalization, payments, digital rights management, content management and content distribution.

Another major programme goal, the implementation of an experimental platform for mobile multi-media services, has now been achieved.

NewsFlash
The NewsFlash application demonstrates the capabilities of the ULURU platform. Among those, the possibility to offer personalized content and to apply flexible charging for various kinds of content, which are regarded essential for successful business.

NewsFlash offers the latest news in text, image and streaming video format. The ULURU platform dynamically adapts the news content offered to the user based on preset preferences, actually requested news articles and a user interest rating of news articles.

The charging of services can be either per period or event based, whereby adaptive rating schemes can be applied. The ULURU platform also provides accounting functionality for splitting revenues and costs for involved service partners such as content providers, advertisers and network operators.

Event Visualiser
The inner workings of the ULURU platform are demonstrated by means of a web-based event visualiser. The visualiser shows, based on real-time triggers, the interaction between platform components such as profiling, content recommendation, content delivery and financial exploitation events that occur during the process of delivering interactive multi-media services.

Mobile Multi-Media User Trials
The ULURU platform is now available for user trials. User trials offer external parties, like content providers and mobile network operators the ability to perform tests on applications for the next generation mobile communication services. The ULURU project is embedded in an infrastructure also used by the Dutch broadcasting media, which is located in the MediaPark, Hilversum the Netherlands.
