The Giga Transaction Services project offers companies a transaction environment for conducting electronic commerce via Next Generation Internet. The project will yield tools which allow simple agreements about the meaning of transactions and accompanying procedures to be established. Subsequently, it will enable the user to generate the software required to carry out these transactions electronically. As a result, the cost of transactions will be drastically reduced and the introduction of e-commerce significantly accelerated.
The main aim of Giga TS, therefore, is to make electronic transactions between companies easy. To achieve this, it will yield a set of tools to develop ICT services for transactions beyond company bounds. These services could be both widely usable services, to be used in countless companies and sectors, and specific services, suitable for one network of companies. The set of tools which Giga TS is developing comprises three components. The first is: an environment for Rapid Service Development (RSD), with tools and methods for the definition and development of transactions and trading environments, coupled with tools for software and e-commerce development. The second is: a library of components for e-commerce and trading environments. This library makes it possible to fit existing components into new services quickly and outlines the cohesion between different components The third component is: technology surveys, focused both on the facilities which Internet 2 offers now or should offer in the future for electronic commerce and on general developments in technologies, tools and frameworks for e-commerce. The knowledge which is gained here serves as input for the component library.
